Blues in Britain - October 2004

Janey Street is a gritty and soulful singer who mines an eclectic gamut of blues, effectively melding the confidence she has in her own talent with an understanding and sympathy for the traditional roots of the blues.

"The Street Less traveled" opens with the funky piano intro to "Around Midnight" before Street segues in with her salacious and soulful vocals, which take on a funky arrogance on "Hangin' By A Shoestring", a powerful performance enhanced by John Jorgenson's tasteful rock inflected guitar. "He Just Does" is a slow funky drag replete with dirty slide; "The Right thing" and "Sail Away" venture, impressively, into deep soul territory; whilst Street's sultry vocals create a salacious late night groove on the jazz inflected "Hands On The Keys".

Bette Midler comes to mind on the 50's styled R&B of the swinging horn fired "Flip Flop Wishy Washy Me", whilst smokey vocals and sax (Jim Hoke) permeate "Mistreated" with a melancholy "Summertime Feel". More Traditional blues grooves are mined on "Good Will", a raggy country blues replete with restrained slide, whilst a fiery Elmore styled intro and a thunderous backbeat underpin Street's overtly sexual vocals on the impressive "Boy Toy".
